Outpatient Joint Replacements

Traditionally, joint replacements have been an inpatient surgical procedure. With the introduction of minimally invasive techniques, modern pain protocols, improved anesthetic techniques, and rapid rehabilitation protocols surgeons are able to perform outpatient or same day total joint replacement procedures. Dr. Durkin performs outpatient or same day surgery for the following procedures: Total Hip replacement, Total knee replacement, Partial knee replacements, Total Shoulder replacement and Reverse Total Shoulder Replacement.

Outpatient total joint replacement is exactly the same as traditional joint replacement, but the patient is allowed to go home the same day as surgery. This allows patients to recover at home instead of overnight in a hospital. Patients will work with a physical therapist to practice stairs before leaving the surgery center in order to safely go home. Patient's will start outpatient physical therapy 5-7 days after surgery.

Benefits of Outpatient Surgery compared to Inpatient Joint Replacement include:

  • Decreased risk of infection
  • Decreased hospital stay
  • Overall decreased cost
  • Improved pain management protocols
  • Early mobilization
  • Careful home monitoring
  • Fewer complications
  • Improved outcomes
  • Increased patient satisfaction
  • Increased patient comfort

Not everyone qualifies for outpatient total joint replacement. Generally healthy patients who do not have significant underlying health conditions or concerns are typically able to undergo same day, outpatient surgery. Dr. Durkin will determine the right surgical setting for you.
